Government of the Northwest Territories Appoints New Infrastructure Minister

Yellowknife, NT – September 4, 2020 – Northwest Territories’ Premier Caroline Cochrane announced several changes to her Cabinet today. “The new assignments take advantage of the broad range of talent and experience on Cabinet, and all Ministers are looking forward to focusing their attention on the needs of NWT residents and the priorities of the 19th Legislative Assembly,” stated Cochrane.
Hon. Diane (Thom) Archie (MLA for Inuvik Boot Lake) was appointed Minister of Infrastructure, as well as Minister Responsible for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation.
Minister Archie was elected to the 19th Legislative Assembly in 2019. Before her election, Ms. Archie also served two terms on the board of directors for the Inuvik Community Corporation, where she was vice-chair during the first term, and then secretary/treasurer.
Ms. Archie was also seconded to British Petroleum for a year – where she had the opportunity to learn about offshore oil and gas development as well as licensing requirements.

Hon. Diane (Thom) Archie Biography
Ms. Archie was most recently a self-government negotiator for the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation (IRC), the organization established under the Inuvialuit land claim to represent the collective interests of the Inuvialuit of the Western Arctic in dealing with governments and the world at large.
Ms. Archie began her career with the IRC as a Youth Worker. She took on increasingly senior roles in her time with the Corporation, including Assistant Comptroller, Executive Director of Community Development, and Chief Negotiator and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs. Ms. Archie has participated in many tables at the regional, territorial and national levels.
Before her election to the 19th Assembly in October of 2019, Ms. Archie also served two terms on the board of directors for the Inuvik Community Corporation, where she was vice-chair during the first term, and then secretary/treasurer.
Ms. Archie was also seconded to British Petroleum for a year – where she had the opportunity to learn about offshore oil and gas development as well as licensing requirements.
Ms. Archie was born and raised in Aklavik, Northwest Territories, where she was custom adopted by her grandparents. Raised in a traditional Inuvialuit lifestyle, she lived a nomadic way of life, moving from seasonal camp to seasonal camp, led by her Daduck, (dad), and her Nannuk, (mom). They were the greatest team she has ever known.
Ms. Archie attended residential school at Grollier Hall in Inuvik, where she completed Grade 12 and then graduated from the Arctic College Business Management Diploma program in Inuvik. While with the IRC, she completed her Bachelor of Management degree and a Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies.
Ms. Archie was selected to Cabinet and appointed by Premier Cochrane as Minister of Health and Social Service, Minister Responsible for Persons with Disabilities and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women effective November 8, 2019.
